Description

ONE DAY ONLY! Located in the Hennage Auditorium. Few figures of the American Revolution inspire as much fascination or ire as Banastre Tarleton. Known as "Bloody Ban" by many for his brutal tactics during the Southern Campaign, the British commander became one of the war's most controversial figures. Yet the story of Tarlten's brutality says as much about who was telling it as what actually happened on the battlefield. Tarleton had his own story to tell is his book titled A History of the Campaigns of 1780 and 1781 in the Southern Provinces of North America. Colonial Williamsburg holds a copy of this 1787 book and now a newly acquired map from that same publication has joined it. In this hybrid lecture and first-person performance, hear directly from Tarleton himself, portrayed by Mark Schneider, before Katie McKinny, Margaret Beck Pritchard Curator of Maps & Prints, takes the stage to explore the book and the map in depth. Together they examine how Tareton's reputation was made and what may have been lost in the making.
