Summary

A one-hour guided tour exploring how William and Mary changed between 1774 and 1782, led by undergraduate public history students preparing for America's 250th.

Description

About In 1774, William & Mary was a royally chartered school with a British-born faculty and a Loyalist representative in the House of Burgesses. By 1782, when the college reopened after the war, everything had changed. Its divinity school and the Brafferton Indian school had closed. Its pre-revolutionary faculty had fled or were removed. Its students had gone to war. Some people enslaved by the college were sold away in response to drastically altered college finances. The campus grounds hosted a military training site and later, armies of three nations. Come take a one-hour tour of the college's historic area with undergraduate guides from HIST 413: William & Mary in the Revolution. The course is sponsored by the National Institute of American History & Democracy, a unit of the history department that trains students in public history, material culture, and the complex social history of this region of Virginia. Tours times Friday through Monday; see the event listing to sign up. William & Mary is (now!) a public university and all are welcome.
