June 4: Don’t Bother to Knock (1952)

A man on the rebound from a failed romance (Richard Widmark) begins a flirtatious affair with a neighbor (Marilyn Monroe), but things don’t go as planned. A roué in 1900s Paris finds himself attracted to a charming young courtesan-in-training in this delightful musical romance. Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier, and Louis Jourdan star under the direction of Vincente Minnelli. The fabulous score was written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. June 18: Anastasia (1956)

Ingrid Bergman plays an amnesiac being groomed by a conman (Yul Brynner) to pass herself off as the Grand Duchess Anastasia, daughter of the last Czar of Russia. As the ruse goes on, he begins to suspect that she might actually be the lost Duchess. Anatole Litvak directed this fine romantic mystery that costars Helen Hayes. A power struggle ensues between King Henry VIII and Chancellor Sir Thomas More when the king wants to defy Catholic church strictures by divorcing his first wife.
